New Alphanumeric CNPJ: Is Your Company Ready for the Change?

Starting on July 27, 2026, Brazil’s new CNPJ model will officially go into operation, allowing both letters and numbers to be used in CNPJ registrations.

This change deserves particular attention from companies that use invoicing systems, ERP software, electronic invoice systems, banking integrations, databases, or other applications that use the CNPJ as an identifier.

There is, however, one important point to clarify from the beginning: the CNPJ numbers of existing companies will not change.

What is changing?

Companies that already have a CNPJ will continue using exactly the same number.

The new format will apply to new company registrations made after the implementation of the new system, as well as future registrations issued under the new standard.

New CNPJ numbers will no longer consist exclusively of digits. Instead, they will use a combination of letters and numbers.

The CNPJ will continue to have a total of 14 characters, while the final two check digits will remain exclusively numeric.

Why is the CNPJ format changing?

According to the Brazilian Federal Revenue Service (Receita Federal), Brazil currently has more than 60 million registered CNPJ numbers, with approximately 6 million new registrations every year.

As the number of registrations continues to grow, the combinations available under the exclusively numeric format are approaching their limit.

The new alphanumeric format significantly expands the number of possible combinations, helping ensure the long-term continuity of Brazil’s business identification system.

The main impact on companies will be technological

Although your company’s existing CNPJ will not change, this does not mean that no action is required.

Many systems used in Brazil were developed under the assumption that a CNPJ would contain numbers only.

As a result, systems that are not prepared to process letters in CNPJ fields may experience problems when a company interacts with customers, suppliers, or other business partners whose CNPJ was issued under the new format.

Potential impacts include:

  • rejection of electronic invoices;
  • failures in integrations with the Brazilian Federal Revenue Service;
  • problems with banking transactions;
  • inconsistencies in tax compliance obligations;
  • errors in automatic registrations and system integrations.

What is the implementation timeline?

During the migration period, between July 23 and July 25, the CNPJ database will be available for inquiries only, with no registration changes permitted.

Starting at 7:00 a.m. on July 25, the system will be temporarily unavailable while the migration is completed.

Operations will resume on July 27, 2026, when the new CNPJ standard officially goes into effect.

What should your company review?

If your company uses systems or applications that process CNPJ information, it is important to confirm whether they are already prepared for the new alphanumeric format.

Key areas that should be reviewed include:

  • ERP and business management systems;
  • tax and electronic invoicing systems;
  • databases that store the CNPJ as a numeric field only;
  • validation rules and input masks;
  • integrations with customers, suppliers, banks, and government agencies;
  • APIs and other applications that use the CNPJ as an identifier.

Companies should therefore speak with their IT teams and software providers to confirm that the necessary system adaptations have been implemented.

A format change with operational consequences

At first glance, adding letters to the CNPJ may appear to be simply a change in registration format.

In practice, however, the change requires attention because many business processes rely on the CNPJ for validation, document issuance, integrations, and data exchange between systems.

Even though your company’s current CNPJ will remain exactly the same, your systems may need to receive and process alphanumeric CNPJ numbers belonging to new customers, suppliers, and business partners.

Preparing your systems is therefore an important step in reducing the risk of operational failures.
